A very rare and fine whistle hilted 1860 staff and field officer’s sword & scabbard by the PETTIBONE   company . This is made smack in the middle of the indian wars. around 1880.

The sword has a higher grade hilt, with more detail to the elements of the guard, i The folding reverse guard folds perfectly. The grip is of rayskin with twisted wire wrap. The blade is very handsomely etched, with “US” on the ricasso opposite the maker’s name. The blade decoration includes highly intricate trophies of arms with an American Flag, on each side of the blade, and an American Eagle with a Union Shield clutched in its claws. The scabbard mounts exactly echo the ferrules on the grip, and the drag has crossed American Flags on one side, and 3 -  5-pointed star on the other. The scabbard inner throat is brass. The body of the scabbard is chromed.

The whistle is part of the hilt, such that one blows into the quillon to produce a piercing whistle.
