RARE Indian War Era US Black Leather M1874 McKeever Cartridge Box for .45-70 Government Cartridges.  The leather is soft and supple.  Some cracking on the retention strap.  Some minor surface cracking on the front of the box.  The interior canvas cartridge pockets are in nice condition.  No rips or tears or fraying of the canvas material.  They are not streched out or torn, as is common, in these boxes.   The box is faintly marked: Rock Island Arsenal.  No other visible markings or dates.  The box has twenty cartridge loops for the .45-70 Cartridge.  This box would have been used with the US Model 1873 Rifle or Carbine.
This is the 5th pattern of the Model 1874 McKeever Cartridge Box.  It does not have the metal grommet around the closure strap hole nor the staples on the top of the lid.  The canvas loops are attached to a canvas backing sewen into the pouch.  There is the storage compartment for the take-down tool on the right side of the box.
